Description
Rare 17th Century allegorical map which first appeared in French novelist, Madeleine de Scudéry's influential 1654 "galant" novel, "Clélie". This example was an illustration in the 1678 English edition of the work, entitled "Clelia". It was Scudéry who first delineated the landscape and topography of mid-17th Century "galanterie", that is a platonic friendship between the two sexes, where natural passions and emotions were moderated & checked by a clearly codified set of accepted social conventions and established moral virtues. For those who might stray from the allotted routes and conventions delineated on the map, Scudéry makes clear that the personal & moral consequences would be disastrous, whether leading to the settlement of "Forgetfulness" beside the "Lake of Indifference" or to fatal shipwreck on the "Sea of Emnity".
