Artist's Description
This superbly designed & highly decorative map of Iceland was first published in Antwerp from 1587 onwards in editions of Abraham Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terraum", the first truly comprehensive Atlas of all regions of the World. Although attributed to Danish mapmaker, Anders Sorensen Velleius, it is more likely that the map was derived from the reports of the Icelandic Bishop of Holar, Gudbrandur Thorlaksson, whom it is known produced a map of the island at around this time. It is one of the first obtainable maps of Iceland and is celebrated for the bizarre menagerie of exotic sea monsters and wild fauna which inhabit the surrounding Atlantic waters, including polar bears seen hunting on the Arctic ice flows to the east of the island.
