Artist's Description
The first edition of this inconic 1877 "Octopus" map of Europe designed by the renowned British civil servant, artist and serio-comic mapmaker, Fred W Rose [1849-1915]. This superb satirical cartoon map was published by London map sellers, G W Bacon & Co, and depicts the unfolding political & military situation in Europe at the time of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877. The map went through several editions and was used as a popular propaganda vehicle to endorse the strongly anti-Russian & pro-Turkish foreign policy stance of the British Government of the time, led by its Conservative Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli.
