Artist's Description
Wonderful 1934 cartoon map of South Carolina, designed by artist and illustrator, Irving Geisberg [1908-1997]. Though born in the Bronx, New York, the Geisberg family subsequently settled in the town of Anderson, South Carolina, where the young Irving grew up. He studied Architecture at UTech Georgia & UPenn in the late 1920s before his future career path as an architect was derailed by the Wall Street Crash of 1929. He subsequently spent the period 1932-34, studying Fine Art at the University of South Carolina, where he was actively involved in student life. After graduating, he pursued a career as a commerical illustrator and artist, eventually settling in New York. During World War II he was recruited to be Art Director & chief of the Graphics section of the OSS, forerunner of the CIA. Having changed his name to Irving Geis, after the War he became a renowned scientific illustrator, noted for his breathtakingly beautiful depictions of macromolecular structures such as the D...
