Description
Rare and entertaining Political Cartoon Map designed by the renowned British serio-comic mapmaker, artist & Government civil servant, Fred W Rose [1849-1915]. It was published in late March 1880 just prior to the national Election of that year by the London map sellers, G W Bacon & Co. Rose, an ardent Conservative supporter & political activist, provides a wonderful piece of popular electioneering propaganda and a ringing endorsement of the incumbent Conservative ministry of Benjamin Disraeli, shown here in the attire of a British peer of the realm, as recently elevated to the House of Lords as Lord Beaconsfield. He is depicted putting to the political sword the prostrate figure of the Liberal Party leader, Lord Hartington. However Disraeli's oldest & most influential political rival & opponent, William Gladstone, himself the former leader of Hartington's Liberal Party, is depicted as a kilted old "windbag", playing the bagpipes & dominating the political landscape of Scotland. Ironically it was Gladstone's hugely popular "Midlothian Campaign" which contributed so significantly to the landslide Liberal victory in the ensuing Election & brought Gladstone his second term in office as British Prime Minister, 1880-1885.
